Check out the herd at "Our Spirit Horses." The heart is perhaps the first horse, . . . Joy Harjo, Creek (Muscogee)
Spirit Horse Jesse James and friend There is nothing as soothing and relieving as running a brush the length of a horse's body. That simple act can reduce stress quicker and for a longer period than any drug or other therapy. Spirit Horses of Montana has developed programs specifically for addressing the symptoms of our over-stressed lives. Several years ago two professionals I knew personally committed suicide and one other I knew dropped dead of a heart attack. I decided I was not going to let the stress of my work get me into an undesirable place in life. So, I bought two horses. One was a yearling and the other was a two year old. Neither was broken or trained or gentled. I trained my first horse when I was 18 and felt competent to train my newly acquired charges. I soon realized I needed to commit time and effort into caring for these horses. My efforts paid off in many ways, including the luxury of going to the corral everyday for my stress release. Others have benefited from the horse's healing powers. In the February 2007 issue of Equus magazine, a soldier who was involved with the invasion of Iraq returned with emotional struggles. He took the advice of a friend and bought two horses, changing his life forever. He believes "no doctor can give me the kind of healing these horses can." He calls them his "brown-eyed listeners." Leroy Comes Last, a Hunkpapa Sioux explains it this way: When you get separated from the horse you forget how to think. He tells the story of his life struggles with alcohol and prison ending when he got involved with rodeo and other horse activities. We are looking forward to hearing from you.
